Department of Correction (DOC)

INITIAL TRAINING PROGRAMS

The Delaware Department of Correction, Employee Development Center delivers Basic Officer Training classes to newly appointed Department of Correction personnel.  The two major categories of initial training are C. E. I. T. and B.O.T.C.

C.E.I.T. (Correctional Employee Initial Training)

Correctional Officers must complete nine weeks of security-oriented training prior to assuming full-time duties at their assigned institutions.  C.E.I.T. classes are held in Dover, Delaware at the Employee Development Center.  The nine week academy is a comprehensive, formal training program and includes a vigorous aerobic circuit exercise program.

  • Interpersonal Communication Skills
  • Searches
  • Restraints
  • Self Defense
  • Firearms Qualification
  • Treatment of Inmates
  • First Aid/CPR
  • Report Writing

Cadets are tested in academics, physical agility, and weapon skills.

Correctional Officers are responsible for protecting the public, staff, and inmates in a multitude of areas both inside and outside the prison walls.  A Correctional Officer's position with the Delaware Department of Correction offers an individual an opportunity to grow, a different challenge each day, and a feeling of accomplishment.

 

B. O. T. C. (Basic Officer Training Course)

Probation and Parole Officers must complete a twelve week training program that is designed to give staff the foundation of knowledge, skills and techniques needed to effectively supervise and manage adult offenders in the community.  B. O. T. C. classes are held at the Employee Development Center in Dover.  The twelve week program is a formal training setting that acquaints officers with practical and useful concepts on how to effectively communicate with and motivate individuals they supervise to change their behavior.

The goal of the B. O. T. C. is to provide Probation & Parole Officers with the necessary tools, information, and instruction to achieve the Agency and Bureau Mission:

  • to promote public safety through the effective supervision of offenders placed under community supervision, SENTAC Levels I - IV;
  • to provide supervision, programs and treatment services that promotes long term self sufficient, law abiding behavior by offenders; and
  • to support efforts to make victims whole in accordance with Delaware law.
