Nelson W. Shelton Executed on: March 17, 1995 Age (at time of execution): 27 Race: White Gender: Male Offense: Murder Method of Execution: Lethal Injection Sentenced to death on April 30, 1993, for his part in the 1992 brutal slaying of a robbery victim. For the first time in state history, Superior Court Judge Jerome O. Herlihy, sentenced three people to death for committing a single murder. Nelson Shelton, along with his brother Steven Shelton, and cousin Jack Outten were all convicted of first degree murder for their part in the bludgeon death of a man who's body was found on East Seventh Street in Wilmington near the Christiana River. |

David F. Dawson Executed on: April 26, 2001 Date of Birth: 04/01/1955 Race: White Gender: Male Offense: Murder 1st Method of Execution: Lethal Injection David F. Dawson was found guilty of first degree murder in the December 1, 1986 slaying of Madeline M. Kisner of Kenton, a book keeper following Dawson's escape from prison. On April 2, 1993, Dawson was sentenced to death by lethal injection by Judge Henry DuPont Ridgely. This is the second time Dawson has been sentenced to death. The first death sentence was reversed by the U.S. Supreme Court and sent back for a new penalty hearing in 1992. |

NOTE: In June of 1986 legislation was enacted that made lethal injection the mode of execution in Delaware. The law also stipulates that persons sentenced to death prior to the laws enactment, have the choice of choosing their mode of execution (either hanging or lethal injection).
On April 11, 1994, Governor Thomas R. Carper signed into law legislation (Senate Bill #57) that mandates the time that an execution is to be carried out (between the hours of 12:01 a.m. and 03:00 a.m.)
