Mail to Inmate

Postal mail guidelines for all prison and community corrections facilities:
- Incoming mail must be sent in white envelopes (with the exception of legal mail) and must contain each of the following: a return address, the inmate’s name, and the inmate’s SBI number or Date of Birth.
- Letters must be on paper that is no larger than standard paper size (8 ½ x 11 inches) and must be sent in envelopes that are no larger than 4 x 9 ½ inches.
- Greeting cards must be commercially produced and made of standard card stock paper. Greeting cards that are battery operated, are made of non-standard card paper or which have embellishments (including rhinestones, stickers, glued-on items), or are multi-fold are not permitted. Greeting cards and envelopes containing greeting cards must be no larger than 5 x 7 inches.
- Mail which includes the use of crayon, highlighter, or other marker on the paper; glitter, lipstick marks, unusual stains, body fluids, perfumes, oils, or other foreign or unknown substances on the paper are prohibited.
- Photographs must be between 4 in. x 6 in. and 8 ½ in. x 11 in. (10 photo limit).
- Mail should be limited to letters, cards, written correspondence, non-Polaroid pictures, and money orders.
- Do NOT mail offenders packages, pornography, cash, stamps, tobacco, or illegal substances.
No PHONE CALLS by the public can be made to an offender. Offenders are permitted to make calls following the policy of the institution in which the offender is located. Establish a pre-paid phone account for an offender
